Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging is referenced frequently in many congregations, yet it isn't always clear what the terms mean or its goals. Add to that the ways in which the concept is coming under attack in some circles, and it leads clergy and other church leaders to ask: what are we to do with this? This seminar will provide a brief overview of what we mean when we talk about diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and why it is fundamental to our faith. We'll discuss how to address the gap when congregation demographics differ from their surrounding neighborhood. It will be an opportunity to help us get beyond the politics that have come associated with DEIB and get to why this is a critical theological framework and mandate. We'll explore why this work speaks to who each of us is in the world and our relationship to one another and God rather than something we do to be nice or even to bring forth justice to others. The session will be led by the Rev. Dr. James D. Ross II, a coach and consultant with Potentials Coaching & Consulting; a former Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the United Church of Christ; and a former pastor and nonprofit leader.
