As worship attendance declines and giving shifts, the roles of churches continues to grow. Churches remain sites for food pantries, meal programs, and other social services, and their physical locations, cultural relevance, and capacity for influence position them to lead community transformation in additional ways. In this session, we will discuss ways churches have demonstrated their contemporary relevance and strengthened their fiscal status by taking on endemic and emerging public needs as diverse as housing, small business support, and community organizing. We also will have time for participant conversations about their challenges, their ideas, and where they see barriers. The session was led by the Rev. Dr. James D. Ross II, a coach and consultant with Potentials Coaching & Consulting; a former Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the United Church of Christ; and a former pastor and nonprofit leader.
