In the case of Pioneer Works, located in the Red Hook neighborhood in Brooklyn, we see a defunct factory building reused as a site for art exhibitions and artists residency. The Pioneer Works building was acquired and renovated by the artist,David Yellen, in 2011. As of 2012, the space hosts a main exhibition hall, spaces for musical performances and lectures, an artist residency program, and educational science programs. The Pioneer Works non-profit also publishes an arts periodical, the Pioneer WorksJournal. Pioneer Works demonstrates the varied opportunities to adapt other underutilized properties within existing property portfolios.
